Choosing decking isn’t just about how your backyard will look this summer. In Oregon, it’s a long-term decision that affects how much maintenance you’ll deal with and how long your deck will last.
Wood decking
Wood, especially cedar, has natural beauty and a lower upfront cost. It needs regular care though. In our wet climate, expect to clean and re-stain or seal it on a regular schedule to prevent moss, rot and weathering. With good care, a wood deck can last for many years.
Composite decking
Composite decking such as Trex costs more initially, but it resists rot, splintering and fading and never needs staining. Cleaning is usually all it needs. Over time, the reduced maintenance can offset the higher price.
Cost over time
Look at the whole picture rather than the day-one price. Wood costs less to build but costs more in time and materials to maintain. Composite costs more to build and less to keep up.
Which should you choose?
If you love the look of natural wood and don’t mind regular maintenance, cedar is a great choice. If you want to spend your weekends enjoying the deck rather than maintaining it, composite is worth serious consideration.
